A journaling practice for presence, intention, and awareness—one cycle at a time.
There are countless ways to journal, each with its own benefits. When I started my journaling practice - about 8 years back I found that most techniques focused on either planning the future or analyzing the past. Neither of those fit my purpose. So I came up with my own journaling method - Cyclic Living - which exists in the space in between. In this blog, I want to share this journaling practice. I hope that it will help you notice where you are right now, make intentional choices, and become more self-aware—every day, every week, every month, and every year.

Being Present Being Intentional Being Self Aware
I used to think being present meant staying focused on “today.” What I want to ‘get done’ today. But then I wondered - what really is the present moment? When does the past end and when does the future start? Is the present as short as a breath or as long as a year?
A breath made sense when I linked it with the previous and the next breath.
A day made sense when I saw it as part of a week.
A week felt clearer when I understood the month I am in.
A month felt more intentional when I was aware of where I wanted to go that year.
And a year felt meaningful when I paused to notice how far I’ve come—and take time to visualize where I’m headed.
What is the Cyclic Living way of journaling?
This way of journaling is about being present, intentional & self aware in a practical way that checks in with life as it’s unfolding right now.
Every day, I sit with an open page. Some days I write a simple to-do list. Other days I write intentions, reminders, or notes about how I’m feeling. There’s no fixed format, because I am not the same person every day.
At the end of every week, I reflect. I ask myself if I took care of my body in a way that respected my menstrual cycle phase and energy levels. I check in on kindness—whether I offered it to someone, and whether I allowed myself to receive it. These set of questions answered weekly help me see patterns instead of failures:
What am I grateful for?
Did I nourish my body with healthy food?
Did I my body and exercise?
What did I do to calm my mind?
How was my sleep like?
Did I take of myself as per my menstrual cycle?
How did I show kindness to someone?
How was I shown kindness by someone?
Was there anything that made me feel down?
What do I want to improve next week?
I also set my intention for the next week based on the phase I will be in.
At the beginning of each month, I set intentions and consciously write down what I want to let go of. Sometimes it’s a habit. Sometimes it’s an emotion, an expectation, or a version of myself that no longer fits. At the end of the month, I give myself a blank page—no prompts, no pressure—just space to be honest.
Once a year, I slow down even more. I write about where I stand emotionally, financially, socially, physically, and spiritually. And then I write about where I want to be—not as a checklist, but as a visualization.
This way of journaling has helped me live with more intention and awareness. It helps me notice the present—not just as a single moment, but as a rhythm. A cycle.
Cyclic Living isn’t about controlling life. It is about experiencing and living it!
Cyclic Living is not about doing more. It is about noticing more and letting that awareness gently shape the way we live.
It has helped me tremendously in my self growth and I hope it will help you too!
